Change the Game is an initiative from Google Play and Girls Make Games to support women in the gaming industry and improve representation in the mobile gaming world. Game prototypes from five teenagers were selected to be developed into full games on the Google Play Store. I worked with one of the winners to refine the concept art for her game, EcoVerse, into a fully realized visual style.
From Concept to Reality
I worked closely with the original designer of EcoVerse and the team at Girls Make Games to take their mountain of awesome ideas and hone them into something that was visually pleasing, true to the original concept artwork, and achievable within the restrictions of a rapid development schedule.
Crafting the Sprites
EcoVerse is a game about restoring the destroyed ecosystems of various planets. I created dozens of sprites based on real-life plants and animals to inhabit the different biomes in-game. Our aim was to execute them in a style that was both minimalist enough to read clearly on a small handheld device, but still presentable when scaled up for larger viewing.
I was also tasked with creating all the game’s user interface assets, which included menu icons and a stamp collection style achievement system.
